Rapid Bay, located about 40 minutes south of Adelaide is a fantastic place to fish, dive, snorkel or just swim with the family off the beach. The beach is absolutely awesome and stunning but has a short break and a steep drop a few feet from the water’s edge, so be wary and watch your kids as it’s a deep drop.
Having built a new jetty not too long ago to replace the original there is a Mecca of fish species to be had here. Depending on the season and time of year you can catch anything from squid to whiting and flathead, Australian salmon, Tommies to BIG kingfish.
Fishing from the beach is great fun and flicking a lure for flathead is addictive at this beach as it is not only looking for the structure to find but casting at a 45 degree angle seems to work best. Work the lure slowly and let the fish find it. Soft plastics are probably the weapon of choice for flathead here as a puff of sand is a great attractant.
Kingfish will usually take fresh squid bait only, and I have seen people take some decent sized fish, although I have seen more get rubbed off on the bottom structure and the jetty pylons.
Squid are best caught when no wind is about and dawn or dusk, but can be caught at any time if the day is right. Try to use a smaller jig as a small squid won’t take a big jig, but a big squid will take a small jig.
Tommies with the usual gents, cockles or soft plastics wound fairly fast.
Salmon with just about any bait but pilchards, squid heads/strips, cockles would be the pick. For the most fun go with a top water lure or popper as they will hammer it hard. Make sure with your retrieve that it is fast as they will almost never take a lure on a slow retrieve.
Fish for whiting in the sand patches between the weed and rock beds. Cockles for bait and poppers for lures, vary your retrieve with the lure as they are finicky and you can never tell what they want until they have it.
Happy fishing and tight lines!!
